Transform Your Relationship with Mind and Body Through

Yoga Therapy

How it works

It’s all about

embodiment

The world exists in your body.

That may sound abstract or even outlandish, but think about it. Everything we know about the world is experienced in and through the physical body and its senses as they interact with the environment.

So it makes sense that our experieince of the world, including our thoughts and emotions, lives in the body. Thus if we want to influence or change our experieince, if we want to heal or grow or thrive — a good place to start is in the physical body.

Benefits of yoga therapy

Our approach to yoga therapy is based on the body’s natural

healing intelligence

Our bodies know how to heal themselves and are constantly working to establish and maintain optimal well-being (believe it or not an eating disorder is evidence of this).

And just as an octopus can regrow a leg, this intelligence can help us regrow connections in the brain and body, expanding our capacities and increasing access to our internal resources, energy and potential.

All we need to do to help this natural process along is make space and provide the right context for it to do its work, that’s where Yoga Therapy comes in.

Pillars of Yoga Therapy

Mind-body continuum

The mind and body are not separate — they are two expressions of one spectrum. Through mindful movement, breath-work, and meditation, individuals learn to cultivate awareness (and enjoyment!) of this continuum including physical sensations, thoughts, and emotions.

Personalized practice

Recognizing that each individual is unique, yoga therapy is tailored to meet the specific needs and goals of the client. Whether physical ailments, mental health concerns, or emotional imbalances, the practice is adapted to suit the individual's abilities, preferences, and circumstances.

Holistic healing

Beyond addressing symptoms, yoga therapy seeks to address the root causes of imbalance, encompassing physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual dimensions in effort to support long-term well-being and personal transformation. The ultimate goal of yoga therapy is to support each client to thrive.

Healing Beyond Symptoms

Experience deep healing by addressing underlying patterns and embracing all aspects of your experience.

Our unique evidence-based approach combines the ancient wisdom of yoga and non-dual philosophy with modern therapeutic techniques to offer a powerful tool for healing from eating disorders.

Backed by scientific research and the testimonials of countless individuals who have found relief through yoga therapy, we believe in its effectiveness in promoting recovery and well-being.

Non-dual philosophy guides us in embracing both light and shadow with acceptance and understanding.

 FAQs

  • Yoga therapy supports healing and recovery by fostering a greater connection between the mind and body. Through practices like mindful movement, breathing exercises, and meditation, yoga therapy can help individuals develop a more compassionate and respectful relationship with their bodies. This mindfulness-based approach also assists in reducing stress and anxiety, common triggers for disordered eating behaviors. By promoting self-awareness and emotional regulation, yoga therapy aids individuals in recognizing and managing the emotions and thoughts that contribute to stress, anxiety, worry, depression and more.

  • Yoga therapy is suitable for a wide range of individuals, but it's particularly beneficial for those seeking a holistic approach to complement their medical and psychological treatment. However, there are some contraindications to consider. For individuals with severe physical health issues, certain yoga poses might be risky. Those with severe cases of eating disorders should first seek stabilization through medical intervention. Additionally, yoga therapy should be approached with caution for individuals with a history of trauma, as certain poses or practices might trigger emotional responses. It's essential to work with a qualified yoga therapist who can tailor the practice to individual needs and limitations.

  • While an individual can experience significant benefits from a single session, yoga therapy is more effective in multiple sessions versus just one because it builds on the principles of practice and consistency, which are key to achieving lasting benefits. Each session allows for a deeper exploration of yoga techniques and adjustments based on individual progress and response. Over time, repeated practice helps to reinforce the mind-body connection, enhance self-awareness, and improve physical and emotional resilience. This gradual progression helps individuals internalize and integrate the therapeutic benefits into their daily lives, leading to more sustainable recovery and well-being. Moreover, multiple sessions provide the therapist with the opportunity to adjust the therapeutic approach as the individual evolves, ensuring that the yoga practices remain aligned with their current needs and health status.

  • In a yoga therapy session, the experience is tailored specifically to the individual’s health needs and wellness goals, making it quite personalized. The session typically begins with a discussion between the therapist and the client to assess their physical, mental, and emotional state. Based on this assessment, the therapist designs a series of activities that may include yoga poses (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), meditation, and guided relaxation. These practices are chosen to address the client’s specific conditions or concerns. If the session is taking place in person the therapist may provide consent-based hands-on adjustments in addition to verbal guidance to ensure the practices are performed safely and effectively. Throughout the session, there's an emphasis on mindful awareness and connection between body and mind, which helps in fostering holistic well-being. The session often concludes with a review of the practice and possibly recommendations for exercises to practice at home.

  • Ursula & Pearl Yoga Therapy sessions are generally 2 hours.

  • If you've never tried yoga or haven't enjoyed past experiences, yoga therapy might still be a suitable option because it is highly customizable and focused on individual needs. Unlike traditional yoga classes that often follow a set sequence meant for group settings, yoga therapy sessions are tailored to your specific health conditions, personal preferences, and wellness goals. This personalized approach ensures that the practices align with your comfort level and interests, potentially offering a more positive and beneficial experience. Moreover, a skilled yoga therapist will work closely with you to create a supportive and non-judgmental environment, helping to ease any apprehensions and adapt the practice in ways that might change your perspective on yoga.
