How we work
-
Our approach integrates the most effective elements of holistic and integrative psychological and therapeutic approaches with time tested spiritual, contemplative and meditative traditions and practices drawing primarily on non-dual sources.
Thus bringing together the best from the mind-body sciences, both modern and those developed and proven over millennia, in order to create true lasting freedom and a deep sense of genuine well-being within clients.
Undergirding this approach are two core philosophies which inform every aspect of practice, in service of providing the most all-encompassing and holistic care, these philosophies are (1) interconnectedness, everything influences everything else, nothing is separate and (2) consciousness is primary, meaning all phenomena occur within consciousness, even the notion of consciousness itself.
Though our entire approach is geared towards the application of ‘skillful means’ aka the right approach for the right person at the right time, these overarching philosophies are consistent throughout everything we do at U+P and provide the groundwork for a recovery process which can eventually mature into a life of freedom, love, expression, creativity, empowerment and aliveness.
-
In addition to our unique approach, we apply a coaching methodology which gives structure, direction and momentum to the process. Coaching, like therapy, is a systematic approach for working with individuals seeking support. However, where therapy is a medical treatment administered by a licensed professional which aims to remediate a specific issue, coaching is a collaborative process of discovery and creativity aimed at identifying, clarifying and ultimately achieving one's goals. Coaching is not a medical treatment nor an alternative to therapy, but can be a powerful supplementary modality for those seeking to move beyond recovery.
-
Overtime and through experience we have come to define 8 key areas of focus or domains along the journey to freedom.
While weight restoration and proper medical and/or therapeutic care are essential for most people in treatment, these domains of recovery usually address only the conventional medical aspects of an eating disorder.
Our process is designed to compliment and/or fill the gaps in conventional medical treatment so as to not just ‘treat a disease’ but rather to support whole individuals in permanently leaving behind the world of disordered eating and entering a paradigm of creativity, fulfillment and self-empowerment.
Though we have defined the process, the path itself is not linear. Meaning, these areas of focus or domains continue to play a role throughout the entire journey, complimenting one another and supporting a continued deepening. We generally begin the process in the first two ‘limbs’, however the rest of the process is dictated by the unique interests, needs and desires of each individual client.

How does this fit with my current treatment plan?
*Weight restoration is an absolutely critical component of recovery, and essential for coaching to be effective. Weight restoration is also, unfortunately, something we are not experts in. Thus coaching at Ursula & Pearl is recommended, and has the possibility of being effective, for folks who are either (1) already weight restored or (2) nearly weight restored and currently working with a trained professional, or team of professionals, to achieve that goal. Each application for coaching is carefully considered, and we will work with you, and your treatment team, to help you determine if this program might be beneficial for you.
We will coach you as the powerful autonomous individual that you are, not like you are fragile and in need of protection
Our coaching methodology is scientifically proven to yield recovery results while our underlying philosophy of liberation is informed by thousands years old traditions of spiritual awakening
Our aim is to get you to recovery and beyond as fast as possible and set you up for a permanent shift out of the disordered eating paradigm
As part of our commitment to providing excellent service we participate in yearly continuing education, receive regular clinical supervision and participate in peer mentorship groups
We do not buy into to most recovery culture, and will not feed your eating disorder paradigm by wasting time talking about eating disorder related topics, rather we will focus almost exclusively on the empowering paradigm and identity that you chose for yourself
We believe that recovery does not have to be hard, but in fact recovery can be pleasurable and enjoyable, and all that is needed to experieince that are some simple tools and shifts in perspectives
In our view eating disorders are not the enemy they are the ally showing us exactly what to do to recover, and full recovery doesn't have to take months or ages but if meaningfully undertaken can take months or even just weeks.
